2003 is the International Year of Fresh Water

2003 is the International Year of Fresh  Water.(www.wateryear2003.org). On October 16, the Dag Hammerschuld Auditorium was the setting for a briefing   entitled  WATER OF LIFE; FRESH PERSPECTIVES ON THE WORLD'S WATER  CRISIS.  The hall was filled to capacity with many seated in the aisles. The briefing, and day-long program, one of the most inspiring ever, came about because of the  networking  efforts of Martha Gallahue of the National Service Conference of  the  A.E.U. with the U.N.  Department of Social Affairs, the Values Caucus, and the Earth Values Caucus cooperating to bring an ethical perspective to this  vital issue.

World Assembly

One of the members of the Bergen Society has created an exciting and innovative project based on the idea that worldwide elections through the internet can now represent the voice of people without the limitations of nation-state interests. The Raynault Foundation has joined with Cal-Poly (California Polytechnic State university in San Luis Obispo) to develop all the practical requirements for an ultimate World Assembly, beginning with a Student World Assembly as a pilot project.

The exhibit was a moving visual presentation of the horrific conditions endured by asylum seekers, detained in maximum security detention centers for no other reason than trying to gain freedom from oppressive conditions in their countries of origin.

The Spread of Democracy

For the past two decades democracy has begun to spread all over the world. In its annual Human Development Report of 2002, the UN focused on democracy and its role in improving people's lives.  By the year 2000, 140 of the world's nearly 200 countries held multi-party elections.  In practice, only 82 countries, with 57% of the world's people, are fully democratic. Compared to 1985, when only 44 countries were truly democratic, with only 38% of the world's people, this is real progress.
