| Title: | Nontheists in the military: Why they need you and how you can help |
| When: | 21.02.2010 11:00 - 12:30 |
| Description: | The United States, it can be argued, is embroiled in a culture war with one side being Dominionist Evangelical Christians who seek to mold US social, educational and military policy to meet their religious goals. The other side is a growing core of Secular Americans seeking to live with a naturalistic worldview and humanist ethics without fear of retribution. The US military is a key battleground in that effort where the power and struggle of both sides is magnified. We need your help.
Jason Torpy is president of the Military Association of Atheists and Freethinkers (MAAF), a national non-profit organization that builds community for nontheistic veterans. He sits on the boards of the Secular Coalition for America (the premier lobbying organization for secular issues) and the American Humanist Association (which fosters humanist community and ethics) and has been active with the nontheist community since entering the military. He addresses issues of separation of church and state and equal opportunity for nontheistic service members in the military. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering Management from West Point and a Masters Degree in Business Administration from The
Ohio State University. Mr. Torpy was commissioned as an officer and served for five years in Germany, Kuwait, and Iraq with the Army's 1st Armored Division. He left the service in 2005 at the rank of Captain to pursue an MBA and currently lives in New York City. |
