 History of Ethical Culture

Founding Generation GalaThe Ethical Culture Society of Bergen County is one of the chapters of the American Ethical Union founded in 1876 by Dr Felix Adler in New York.  Dr. Adler was a professor of Philosophy at Columbia University and a social reformer.  He perceived a need for a religion based on "deed before creed".

He founded Ethical Culture to focus on community and good works, rather than personal salvation.

Sunday School Rite of Passage

The Ethical Culture Society of Bergen County has developed an elaborate celebration marking graduation from the Ethical Culture Society. The ceremony itself, which takes place in May or June, includes statements about the students from his or her mentor, a statement from parents and the student's presentation, which is the centerpiece of the celebration.

Funerals and Memorials

The Ethical Culture Society provides funeral and memorial services at the time of death for members of the Society and people from the general community.

Hanging Out

Hanging Out

The Ethical Society takes an active interest in fostering friendships among members and creating opportunities to interact socially. Get-togethers take all different forms, either spontaneous or recurring.

A sampling includes parties, Saturday night suppers in members’ homes, hikes, picnics, cultural outings, and affinity groups like our Bridge Club and our "who lunch". Yearly celebrations include our Halloween party and our New Year’s Day brunch.

We believe that people choose Ethical Culture only when they feel at home and see the potential to forge lasting, mutually satisfying relationships.
